In 1954, the Agricultural University – Plovdiv (back then known as Higher Agricultural Institute “Vasil Kolarov”) began publishing the newspaper “Kolarovets”, named after the patron of the university – Vasil Kolarov. The first issue was published on July 6, 1954. The first editorial board included: Prof. Georgi Staykov; Assoc. The newspaper was published irregularly, only a few issues a year, and from 1971 the newspaper had a break until January 1979 when the first issue of the new “Kolarovets” was published. Some of the editors at that time were Assoc. Prof. Murgov, Assoc. Prof. Stanchev, Assoc. Prof. Tsolov, and Assoc. Prof. Behar. The photographs in the newspaper were supplied by Yanka Matakieva, the layout was done by Prof. Cheshmedzhiev, the sports section was written by Assoc. Prof. Sandyu Beshev, and Vasil Kerin and Nedyalka Uzunova were the organizers.

The newspaper started with a “Youth Editorial”, where foreign students were attracted as collaborators: Alicia from Poland, Armenio from Portugal, Albrek from Yemen.
From May 31, 1990, the newspaper “Kolarovets” was published under the name “Niva” (translated as “field” meaning “land plot”) with Editor-in-chief Sashka Kalinova. The last issue of “Niva” appeared in 1997.
